Pots and Pans

Last year, when we were getting married, Matt’s mom threw me a bridal shower. The really nice ladies in her neighborhood all pitched in to buy us a nice set of pans. We picked out a fancy set of waterless cookware and placed the order online. Unfortunately the pans never came. Apparently we picked a less than honest online retailer for the purchase. We were able to get the money refunded and now I am trying to make the decision of what kind of pans to get (we can’t get our fancy ones at that price – guess that should have been a clue about the seller, huh?)

So, all you smart cookers out there – I need some recommendations. The little pans I bought when I moved out are thrashed (the Teflon is starting to flake, which means I have to throw them out!) What type of a set should I get? Or should I just buy another set of cheap ones from the WalMart? I don’t do any fancy cooking (just don’t have the time or the inclination). Do I need something like stainless steel, or is one of the nice “non-stick” sets just as good. I am hoping to find a set that includes pans with lids! There are all these recipes that tell me to cook covered, but I can’t find a pan with a lid. Don’t the recipe people and the pan people talk?

So – suggestions please! Is it worth paying for an expensive set – or is a cheaper one really just as good?

I look forward to getting a lot of comments on this one (PLEASE!)

i like the non stick teflon kind- i have had stainless and stuff burns in them. I was making a grilled cheese the first year we were married and i forgot about it (due to judge judy)and I still have a black imprint of my bread in the pan... i have forgoten stuff in the non stick pans but it still just slides right out... charcoal bread and all!

I think the set I got when Scott and I got married is from Sams's Club.. or Costco.. (Can't go wrong there).. It has held up sooo well (probably the same set Jyl has). I love the non-stick teflon.. and it has held up pretty well to my spatula. Good luck!!

Sorry, I have never had nice pots or pans so i don't know! We have some cheap kind, and they seem to work ok (not that I do that much fancy cooking with them)

When I was married, some 32 years ago, we got an expensive set of waterless cookware as a gift from the Haun side of the family. You know, the black ones. Still using them. They are not teflon coated. The inside is gradually becoming more silver, but it started out as black as the outside. Great pans! Practically indestructable. You don't have to cook fancy to appreciate a nice heavy saucepan. However, I also have used little teflon coated pans. (My set came with a very LARGE frying pan, 2 normal saucepans, and one small saucepan.) So I have gone thru six or eight frying pans of various sizes in the same period of time. My very favorite frying pan was one your Dad bought when he was single and living in Wyoming. When it's teflon coating started to flake off, I scrubbed it off down to the steel. I used it all these years, with it's lid. You grew up with it. The bottom of the pan finally warped enough that it woulnd't sit flat on the burner. I threw it out when Wally got me new pans. Pros and cons to both....
