Cross Country Falling

Matt’s friend Scott was in town this weekend and he and Matt wanted to go Cross Country Skiing. For some reason I still can’t understand, they wanted me to come too. I tried to get out of it, but Matt was persistent and come Saturday morning I was dress warm and ready to head out.
We went up to Snow Basin. It was a nice day and the resort was crowded. I got out of the car and for the very first time in my life put skis on my feet. I will admit that it was awkward and that I was scared to death. We went along for a while, going slightly up hill. I liked up hill. But, when faced with a gradual slope down, I freaked out. I didn’t like being out of control, and I was very out of control. I made it about half way down the hill before I fell down for the first time. Then I went the rest of the way. My sweet husband traded me skis, because mine were faster than his, and I didn’t want to go fast. Then we had a good time sliding over flat and some up-hill. I was actually starting to enjoy the workout that I was getting and starting to have fun out in the winter. But then I was faced with another hill, and disaster struck. I fell and fell and fell until I just didn’t want to get up again. I side stepped it to the bottom, then up again, but then there was a steep hill, so I put my skis over my shoulder and walked down. Once I got to the bottom I strapped the skis back on and made really good time back to the car. I was so happy to take the skis off and sit down! I must admit it was not a very successful first time skiing. Matt assures me I did good, but I think he just wants me to go with him again. I didn’t break any bones, but I had some awesome sore muscles, and some very nice bruises to show for my day of fun.

Cross country skiing IS a really good workout. I understand your fear of sliding downhill and not being able to control your speed. With practice, you'll learn how, and find even more muscles you didn't know you had. Be patient with yourself.
