Our Fine Feathered Friends

Last year about this time I ( and plenty of other people in my neighborhood) noticed that there were what seemed like a million birds living in my pine tree.  I didn’t think much about it, even though they would sing loudly all evening and early in the morning.  I didn’t even notice that they left sometime in the winter.
I was reminded of my birds earlier this summer and I commented that I hadn’t seen them all summer.  I thought maybe they moved to another tree at another house.  But then we got back from our Trip to California over Labor Day and they were back!  Hundreds of birds in my tree!  I paid more attention this year and noticed that they would be gone all day and then would start flying into the tree right before sunset.  I wanted to know what kind of bird they were so I took the camera out with the zoom lens and tried to take a picture of them.
Here is what I have.

We counted around 100 coming into the tree the day we took the pictures.  I don't know if more came or left when we were done.

Then I noticed today that they are gone.  I don’t know when they left but I haven’t heard them since we got back from Orlando (that will be the next post).  I guess I will wait to see them again next year.

These are European Starlings. In the spring and summer they are mostly black but this time of year through winter they have speckles. They would have been roosting in your trees at night.

Maybe you are on a migration route.
