Running after Midnight

my dad heard that there was going to be a 5 and 10k race down the Ogden River Parkway at the end of June and that it would be a midnight race (started at 11pm and supposed to finish before midnight).  I was quick to sign up, because I wasn't able to do the Legacy midnight run that my family did last year.  Matt and I went to the store and stocked up on glow sticks and I was ready to go!

Unfortunately, the race didn't go that well for me.  I didn't know it, but I was coming down with a horrible cold (that I would have for the next 4 weeks) and my body was just dog tired.  I tried to keep up with my dad for a while, but that didn't last.  I was grateful that I had my head lamp on, because there were some areas of the trail that were really dark.  I was slow enough that I wasn't really in the pack, so there were times when I was alone in the dark, not a nice feeling really.  Also, my Garmin watch was showing me that I should be almost done with my 10K (6.2 miles) and I knew I still had a long way to go on the course because I hadn't even reached the turn around point yet.  Matt, who was tracking me on GPS actually called me to make sure I wasn't lost because I wasn't where the website said the race would go.  I assured him I was where I was supposed to be, and kept trucking along.  I was slowing WAY down and getting kind of frustrated so I caught up to a girl that I had been passing over and over in the race and we decided to finish together.  We talked for a while about how this was the longest 10k we had ever done.  Finally, we made it over the highway and Matt was there waiting for me and let us know we only had a half a mile left.  That wasn't too good of news since I was already a half a mile over what I thought I was going to have to do.  But we slogged it in and I was happy to be done.

Unfortunately that night I just go SO SICK and had a rotten cold for the rest of the month (since it was now the 1st of July).  That was too bad.  Other than that, and the extra mile we had to run, I didn't have too bad of a time.
