Frozen Toes and Acoustic Lollypops

My sisters and I enjoy going to concerts, so when we heard that Mika was coming to Salt Lake City we got ourselves some tickets. The concert was at a club downtown. Val and I had been to several concerts at this club and knew that they often keep you standing out in the cold long after the scheduled “door” time. So we were smart! The schedule said doors at 6 and concert at 7, so we showed up at 7. We guessed that it meant that we would be able to just walk right in and enjoy the show. Hahahaha, boy, were we wrong. After a small adventure trying to find a parking spot, we went to the club, and got in the back of the line. Now, this line was basically stretching the entire block, and it wasn’t moving at all. OK, we reasoned, maybe doors will be at seven. Soon we began to hear rumors through the crowd that the equipment truck had gotten stuck somewhere on its way from Chicago and that the concert would be canceled. “Good” I thought. “Then I can get out of line and go warm up somewhere.” However, this didn’t happen. My sisters and I continued to make little deadlines such as “if the line doesn’t move by 8, we are leaving.” And then “if the line doesn’t move by 8:30 we are really getting out of here.” But we continued to stand there, our toes and fingers slowing turning a pretty shade of blue. We were some of the lucky (or smart) ones however – we had our coats! There were many people in line that were just in their t-shirts, or even better just in their bright pink leggings and mini denim skirts (yep, the 80s were back in full force). Finally, just when we were ready to eat the tickets and go to a movie the line began to move. We finally got inside! There had been a problem with the bands equipment truck and it didn’t make it. The Club refunded each of us $10 from the ticket price and we saw an acoustic Mika show. The first (and probably the last) one ever. It was a good show, I had fun. The crowed was happy, probably just to be inside and warm. The band was trying really hard to do something good and make a fun show. They were working with limited resources though, and didn’t know how to do many of their shows unplugged. They actually repeated the first song for the encore. That is the first time I have ever seen that done. And then, 45 minutes after the show started, we were back out in the cold. But it was a fun night.
