Since Matt and I are both off work right now, we decided to spend some time up at the cabin. We were going to go up the weekend after Christmas, but it was snowing and we determined it wasn't worth the risk. Instead we went up to celebrate "Happy New Year's" Eve and day with the family up at the cabin. I have to admit that I had ulterior motives in going up. I was really looking forward to having so many people around to snuggle with Emmy while I caught up on some sleep.
We came up on Tuesday, the 30th. It was set to be Emmy's first overnight trip, and her longest car ride ever. We had no idea what to expect. We loaded the car full and set out, keeping our fingers crossed that she would sleep the whole way up. Unfortunately we had to stop for gas. Emmy does not like being in her car seat if the car isn't moving. We thought she would calm back down and tried to just keep driving. She flipped her crying into a higher gear and we pulled over. I climbed into the back seat next to her and fed her a little and we made it the rest of the way to the lake. I was surprised by the snow that was still on the road. I guess it had been windy and blew some of the fresh snow that had fallen the previous few days. It was also really cold. The thermometer in the car showed -1 on our drive up.
It was just about dinner time when we arrived at the cabin. Chrystie and her family had just returned from sledding. We brought in all our stuff (and we had lots of stuff) and then it was time for dinner. Chrystie had made tacos for everyone (TACO TUESDAY). Preston offered to hold Emmy while we ate, and it was great to finally be able to sit at a table and eat with both hands. We played games and watched movies after dinner and then went to bed.
Wednesday was a cold day at the cabin. Chrystie, Preston, and their two oldest kids went skiing. Cora stayed at the cabin with us and was a very enthusiastic helper with Emmy. She liked to help her swing in her swing, and to play with her on the jungle gym mat. She was also happy to help feed her and surprisingly enthusiastic to help with diaper changes. Grandma and Grandpa were great and took turns holding Emmy and giving me and Matt some time to relax. I put some potatoes in the oven for dinner and they were done just when the other's returned from skiing. We had a great potato bar for dinner. Yum.
It was New Year's eve (or Happy New Year's Eve as the kids said). We again played games. The kids liked playing Apples to Apples and Uno Attack. After a game or two we decided it was time to celebrate Happy New Year (it was about 8:30). We pulled out the noise makers, streamers, hats, and some poppers, went out on the deck (where it was like 4 degrees) and celebrated. Then the kids went to bed. Preston had rented Guardians of the Galaxy and we started to watch that. I bailed and went to bed when Emmy fell asleep about 10:30. Happy new year.
New Year's Day was another cold one. This time it was foggy too. That made it harder to spend any time outside. My mom took Emmy in the morning and I went back to bed, since the baby woke up at 5:00am and didn't want to go back to sleep. I really did! So it was great to have Grandma there to help. I woke up and played games with the kids again. It was a pretty mellow day. We had planned on going home that day, but I was totally loving all the help with Emmy and all the rest I was getting, so we decided to stick around another day. The sun finally came out right before it set and the kids went out to go sledding. I bundled Emmy up and we went out to watch for a while. It was still super cold, so we didn't last long. My mom made some yummy chicken for dinner and we played more games - then headed to bed again.
We had to go home the next day (Friday). We were running out of formula for the baby and couldn't put our return trip off any more. We spend some of the morning binge watching Scooby Doo with Arden, but then packed up the car and said good-bye to everyone.
It was a fun to spend time with family and to celebrate the New Year.
