Happy Pioneer Day

Thursday was the 24th of July. Here in Utah, that is known as Pioneer Day – or another day off of work! Matt and I decided to embrace the spirit of Pioneer Day and participate in some festivities. (Well, more watch than participate but you have to start somewhere). Wednesday night, the 23rd, we invited our new downstairs neighbors over for a barbecue. Sadly we don’t own a nice grill, but we are more than happy to pull our George Foreman out on the deck and call it a barbecue, so that is what we did. Our neighbors are very nice and they brought over a watermelon and the makin’s of root beer floats. We had some good hotdogs and hamburgers and some yummy desert and then headed out for the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo.

I hadn’t been to a rodeo in a million (OK, maybe just 20) years, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. We found a parking spot, but the arena was pretty full by the time we got there. We missed Matt’s favorite part of the Rodeo – the Mutton Busting – so that was a little disappointing. But we did make it in time to see the skydivers and all the other pre-show stuff. It got a little long and hot, but finally the real rodeo started with bareback horse riding. That was pretty cool. They did all the team roping and steer wrestling and stuff also. I find that I always cheer for the little cow to get away from the big mean cowboy. I guess I am a city girl. It was a good night, they had bull riding and more bronco riding, and barrel racing and all the good stuff. To finish off the night they brought in some motorcycles and they did some crazy stuff on those.

Now, the last time I went to a rodeo, you know, a million years ago, they had an accident during the precision riding part. This is the part when the Weber County sheriffs come out and ride their horses in a circle and in a figure eight and stuff. I remember going to the Rodeo as a kid and two of the horses ran into each other and one of the riders fell off and broke his arm or something. It was pretty tragic. So this time at the Rodeo, I was more worried that there would be an injury during that part than during the bull riding.

Thursday morning, to keep with tradition, my friend Dawn and I went to the Ogden parade. It is a pretty lame parade (they don’t throw candy) but we started going to it many years ago, and we are big fans of tradition. So I woke up early and met her and her little boy Carson at the parade. We had a good time, and it was fun to see little Carson dance to the bands and wave at all the floats (he is almost 2 years old). We did a barbecue at Dawn’s house with her husband that night and had a good time.

Here are a couple pictures Matt took at the Rodeo. He took a lot of really good ones, but these two are his favorite.

I root for the baby cows too. Especially on the one where they clothesline the little suckers and then body slam them and tie their feet together. Poor little things! Makes me cheer more for the bulls at the end. PAYBACK TIME BABY!
